What Makes Our Schools Different-What Makes Them Catholic?
For those of us in Catholic schools the ability to answer that question and determine how we are doing as a Catholic school has just become a little easier. The National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Elementary and Secondary Catholic Schools is a document recently released and the result of two years of collaboration among Catholic educators across the nation and represents the wisdom, expertise, passion and best practices of leaders and scholars of Catholic higher education institutions, superintendents, principals, teachers, bishops, pastors and Catholic supporters.
The publication combines the teachings of Church documents, with more recent statements from Blessed Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and the US Bishops on the purpose and importance of Catholic schools and clearly identifies the Defining Characteristics of Catholics schools. It also outlines specific Standards and Benchmarks in four areas: Mission and Catholic Identity, Governance and Leadership, Academic Excellence, and Operational Vitality.
Catholic parents, those who currently have chosen Catholic schools and those who have not yet considered Catholic schools for their children, it is my hope the Defining Characteristics help clarify your definition of a “successful” school by Catholic standards. We would love to serve with all Catholic parents to continue the movement to make the Defining Characteristics a reality in our schools. Prayerfully consider the possibilities and advantages of sending your children to a school that has clearly stated goals and partners with you in forming your children in faith, academic excellence and supports the growth and evangelizing mission of our Church.
